The initial chapters of the legendary history of viticulture of the Maison MUMM were written well before 1827, the official foundation date; the Mumm family, whose lineage includes barons and knights, dates back to the 12th century. As early as 1761, the family had started a wine production and trading business in Cologne, Germany, with the name "P.A.Mumm", from the name of the owner Peter Arnold Mumm. The company owned extensive vineyards in the Rhine region, where it produced its wines.
