The initial chapters of the legendary history of viticulture of the Maison MUMM were written well before 1827, the official foundation date; the Mumm family, whose lineage includes barons and knights, dates back to the 12th century. As early as 1761, the family had started a wine production and trading business in Cologne, Germany, with the name "P.A.Mumm", from the name of the owner Peter Arnold Mumm.
